Abstract: The heats of adsorption of three isomers of xylene on the Pt-SiO2-Al2O3 isomerization catalyst have been measured by gas chromatographic technique with hydrogen as a carrier gas in the temperature range of 340 to 460℃, and compared with those obtained from the measurement of reaction kinetics by using a fixed bed flow reactor. A retention volume of xylene varied with an amount of sample injected and with a contact time (amount of catalyst packed/flow rate of carrier gas). Under the condition of a constant contact time, an apparent heat of adsorption was determined from the temperature dependency of the retention volume obtained, by extrapolating to infinitesimal samples. The apparent heat of adsorption thus obtained was incrgased with contact times, which may arise from the extent of reaction. In order to eliminate the extent of reaction, the extrapolation of the apparent heat of aqsorption was made to infinitesimal contact times. The heats of adsorption of ο-, m-, and p-xylene for infinitesimal contact times were found to be 7.9 ± 2.1, 6.2 ± O.4, and 5.9 ± O.9 kcal/mole, respectively. On the other hand, from the analysis of reaction kinetics, the xylene isomerization was verified to consist of six interconversion reactions among three isomers, each of which follows the rate equation of Langmuir-Hinshelwood type, and the heats of adsorption of these isomers were determined from the temperature dependency of adsorption equilibrium constants. Taking the error into account, both heats of adsorption were in good agreement. Abstract: A series of aromatic ionenes with different spacing between quarternary nitrogrn atoms was prepared by Menschutkin reaction of N, N, N', N' -tetramethyldiaminodiphenylmethane and α, ω-aliphatic dibromides. The polymerization was carried out in dimethylformamide solution using equimolar monomers at 30℃. The total concentration of monomers was 1.0 mole/1 and the reaction time was 170 hr. for every polymerization. The reaction mixture was poured into a large excess of acetone and the precipitated reaction product was dried under vacuum at 50℃ a week. The polymerization products were white and very hygroscopic solid, which was soluble in methanol and water but insoluble in the most organic solvents. The yields were 10-30%. High speed liquid chromatography showed single peaks for the polymers except for the ionene from 1,10-dibromodecane, where two peaks were observed. Elementary analyses, halogen ion titrations, infrared spectra, NMR spectra, and mass spectra of the polymer strongly suggested that this type of ionenes has the structure corresponding to that expected from Menschutkin reaction, and that terminal groups are mainly dimethyl amino groups. The TG-DTA measurement revealed that this type of aromatic ionenes decomposed at 130-150℃, which is considerably lower than 250℃ for aliphatic ionenes. Abstract: Four types of segmented polyurethanes with systematically varying blockness of hard segment were prepared. The dynamic viscoelastic properties of the segmented polyurethanes were studied in a wide range of temperature. These segmented polyurethanes were prepared by prepolymer technique using polyoxy tetramethylene glycol (PTMG) (Mn=1000 and 2000) and 4, 4'-diphenylmethanediisocyanate as starting materials and hydrazine and ethylenediamine as chain extenders. The samples were studied at a frequency of 110 Hz by Vibron DDV III-B. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and infrared spectroscopy were also studied. These segmented polyurethanes showed tanδ maxima at two temperatures (-120℃ and -50℃). As the hard segment concentration was increased, main dispersion shifted to a lower temperature, its height of tanδ peak decreased and its width widened. As the moleculare weight of PTMG was increased, main dispersion shifted to a lower temperature. Storage modulus E' in a series of PTMG 1000-HD was increased as hard segment concentration was increased, but E' in a series of PTMG 2000-HD and -EDA were not affected. Abstract: A nonstationary random excitation which acts upon a structural system is considered. A simply one degree-freedom structural system with that excitation is analyzed by using a covariance equation method. Numerically calculating, the basic covariance equations are presented. A nonstationary response is easily calculated with a covariance equation method as compare with an integrated method and this method can extend to the some nonstationary problems. Abstract: The analytical investigation on the transverse free vibrations of the rectangular plate supported at the periphery and at oblique edges inside the interior of the plate is reported in this paper. The effects of the edges inside the interior of the plate on the free vibrations of the plate is taken into account by replacing the edges with rows of the point supports, which produce restraining forces acting on the plate so that the plate def1ection is zero at the each point support, and this problem of vibrations of the plate is strictly solved based on the fundamental differential equation of the plate. The resulting compatibility equation provides the desired natural frequency equation. As examples, simply supported rectangular plates with a interior edge are illustrated. Comparisons with results obtained by the energy method and experiment, effects of the supporting angle on the natural frequencies, and the vibration mode shape are presented. Abstract: Nonlinear axi-symmetric vibrations of circular plates are investigated by using Karman's equations composed of terms of the stress function and the def1ection of the plate. A multiple degree of freedom approach which considers multiple modes and corresponding time functions is adopted to obtain more reliable solution than the previous solutions. The application of a Galerkin method to solve the governing nonlinear simultaneous partial differential equations yields nonlinear simultaneous ordinary differential equations, of which the solution is obtained by the harmonic balance method. The set of nonlinear algebraic equations is solved on the digital computer by the Newton-Raphson method. Abstract: The optimum design for I-section girders is the most fundamental approach of their various designs and a great n umber of study on it have been reported but the study on a design method including fabrication cost has litt1e been reported. The present paper is intended for a study on the optimum design including fabrication cost. In this report the optimum design is investigated by the SUMT method (the sequence of unconstrained minimization technique) for I-section girders with one cover plate on either upper or lower flange with a comparison with SLP method (the sequence of linear programing method) which is one of the other non-linear programings, under the assumption that cover plate thickness. flange plate thickness, web plate high and length of cover plate from the center line of the girder are variables, and cover plate width, flange plate width and web plate thickness are constants. Abstract: This paper presents the results of an experimental study of the vertical rise of long waves on an uniform slope (1:60) connected with the horizontal bed. The investigation is carried out by employing a wave like a solitary wave (a wave consisting of a single elevation : η=Hsin2σt, σ=π:/T, on the toe of the slope). The purpose of this laboratory study is to examine the reliability of the extrapolated straight Jine of the experimental equation by K. Kaplan. In this paper the experimental waves are classified into three groups, i.e. breaking waves, surging waves and non-breaking waves, according to the wave profile on the shore line and the data of experiments are analyzed. According to this classification, fenomena of run up of long waves are represented in detail. Consequently it is shown that the extrapolated straight line by K. Abstract: Deformation of soils are composed of shear and volumetric deformations. Volume change are caused by both shear stress and hydrostatic stress and they are respectively called dilatancy, consolidation. Abstract: The temperature in the soil near the ground surface is determined by the thermal characteristics of soil and thermal flux between the soil and adjacent atmosphere. Now, we consider the thermal diffusivity α, being one of the thermal characteristics. For example, we consider the frost penetration problem in highway soils. If it were possible to decrease the thermal diffusivity from, say, α=10.3x10-3 (cm2/sec) to α=7.7 X 10-3 (20%), then the frost penetration depth decreases approximately 13.0% as compared with α=1 0 .3 X 10-3. If diffusivity could be decreased from α=7.7 X 1'0-3 to 5.2 X 10-3 (33%), the frost penetration depth would be decreased by an : mount of approximately 19%. Thus, the thermal property diffusivity α, seems to be various factors of economic importance in building or repairing the road and the frost penetration in road. Abstract: This study is concerned with an analysis of the elasto-plastic response of a beam-column. Author treats on cases of a beam-column subjected to constant axial thrust and dynamically varied lateral loads. The moment-curvature relation used for the analysis is obtained by using the simulation program of stress-strain relation of mild steel formulated by the author and other. Abstract: The out-of-plane bending and twisting behavior of a circular beam with a thin walled cross section is studied theoretically and experimentally in this report. The theoretical results are obtained by using two methods, which are a general curved beam theory including the effect of the curvature on cross sectional constants and it's simplified slender beam theory. Abstract: In the case of buckling of 3-hinged parabolic arch under vertical uniform load, the 3-types of buck1ing modes have been confirmed experimentally. Therefore, it is expected that there may be 3-types of buckling mode concerning the elastic buck1ing of 3-hinged circular arch under circular uniform load. In this paper, the critical loads and buck1ing modes of arbitrary types of 3-hinged circular arches were analyzed under circular uniform load, bγusing the finite deformation equation of 3-hinged arch. As a resu1t of numerical analysis, 2-types of symmetric buck1ing modes, l-type of antisy- mmetric buck1ing mode and the other type of buckling mode in asymmetric 3-hinged arch are confirmed theoretically. Abstract: A graphical approach to solving simultaneous equations was tried in a previous paper by a signal flow graphical representation of elimination. In this paper, elimination is characterized by "combinatorial graphs" , which are defined as the graphs consisting of a set of points with "coordinates" and a set of branches with "coefficients". The "coordinates" of points are given by combinations of suffices corresponding to equations, and the "coefficient" of a branch between two points is given by a definite operation concerning the "coordinates" of these points. A signal flow graph called "elimination graph" is obtained from a graphical representation of elimination on the combinatorial graph associated with a given system of equations. Abstract: The diffraction field of a wave beam by an annular aperture is obtained by using the Kirchhoff approximation. This field is then represented as a sum of beam mode functions which have arbitrary beam wave parameters. The expansion coefficients which represent the mode coupling coefficients have simple forms and theoretical or numerical discussions on them can be done with ease. Abstract: We are decreasing wave making resistance of hydrojet boats． For this purpose，we suck in water from intake slits which are installed at the prow near the water level．By this improvement，we reduced the wave-standing at the prow. Abstract: It has often occured that bolts have broken at the re-fastening under employment. In this paper, the basic aspect of this phenomenon is studied by following experimental procedure using the notched specimen with circumferential half circular groove, and a criterion on the combined damage of fatigue pre-strain is proposed. The notch specimen is pulled to logarithmic plastic strain, εp=1.3%, then is applied by direct stress σ=11.0kg/mm2 for several ratios of repetitions, n1/N1, in which N1 is fatigue 1ife and n1 is number of repetitions at σ=11.0 kg/mm2. After this procedure, this specimen is pulled again to εp=1.3% and is applied by σ=11.0 kg/mm2. In the case of the second experiment, stress level is different the first stage from the second stage of above mentioned procedure, that is, the first applied stress is σ1=9.5 kg/mm2 and the second is σ2=11.0 kg/mm2. According to the results of these experiments, in the case of the small ratio of repetitions the specimen is strengthened, but in other cases are weakened, compared with the fatigue life of the pre-strained materials of εp= 2.6%, which is the same total plastic strain of the specimen, 1.3% plus 1.3%. This phenomenon is complicated by multiple plastic strains and stress repetitions and by characteristics of materials on work hardening and fatigue. Therefore, the author wil1 propose that we use the two S-N curves, εp=1.3% and εp=2.6%, and apply the Miner's damage rule.
