Abstract: Hypersthene with phlogopite has been recently recognized by the authors in druse of olivine basalt from the Makishima Island, Nagasaki City, Kyushu. This hypersthene has the following physical and optical properties : D=3.49, α=1.663~1.695, γ=1.708~1.710, γ-α=0.016 ; 2^Vx=59°~60° ; X=pale reddish brown, Y=pale greenish brown, Z=pale green. The chemical compositions are given in Table 3,viz. SiO_2 53.09, TiO_2 0.40, Al_2O_3 0.52, FeO 21.91, MnO 0.42, MgO 21.60, CaO 1.62, Na_2O none, K_2O none, total 99.56%. The formula is given as (Ca_0.033 Mg_0.608 Mn_0.007 Fe_0.332 Ti_0.006 Al_0.007)_0.993 (Si_0.996 Al_0.004)_1.000 O_3.000. This hypersthene has the following Mol. % :Tsch 0.4 Wo 3.0 En 62.0 Fs 34.6
