Title:
Other Titles: Rokumichijizo Statues, Hakone
Issue Date: 20-Jun-2008
This is 3.2m magaibotoke (the largest in Kanto region during the Kamakura Period) carved into over seven meter high pyrozene andesite rock for jizo worship during Middle Ages. Although there is only one jizo here, this is called Rokudo (Six Way) Jizo because this is one of the group of stone buddhas around Shojingaike Pond which was regarded as the crossroad of Rokudo (lit. Six Road: Buddhist terminology meaning transmigration in the six paths of life). As there is no shack-like cover over the jizo, this photo was taken after 1878.
