Kumano Falls and Juniso Pond, located near Kumano Shinto Shrine (present day Chuo Park, Shinjuku Ward), were sightseeing spots since the Edo Period. The deity of Kumano Shinto Shrine had been transferred to the shrine from Kishu (present-day Wakayama Prefecture). Even during the Meiji Period these places were popular because they made an easy day trip from the city. It is said that many people used to bathe here in summer. The waterfall disappeared due to the construction of a water filtration plant in 1893, and the pond was eventually filled in. At present, people enjoy the hot springs in concrete buildings. Taken by Felix Beato in the beginning of the Meiji Period.
