抄録: Cell differentiation in ethylnitrosourea induced rat brain tumors was studied by immunohistochemical demonstrations of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), vimentin, α-and β-subunits of S 100 protein (S 100 α, S 100 β), myelin basic protein (MBP), Leu 7 and neuron specific enolase (NSE), comparing with normal and reactive glial cells in the brain. GFAP positive astrocytic cells in tumors showed morphologically and immunohistochemically similar appearances to fibrous astrocytes in the white matter and hypertrophic astrocytes around stab wounds, and their predominance in the white matter was also similarly observed in lesions induced by stab wounds. Furthermore, they did not form a mass as tumors. Thus GFAP positive astrocytic cells were suggested to be reactive astrocytes associated with tissue destruction, especially demyelination provoked by tumor growth. The radioautographic study also supported this concept. On the other hand, GFAP negative cells could not be defined by the present immunohistochemical study, despite the fact that the morphological heterogeneity among them was noticed. Vimentin positive sarcomatous foci, secondary changes associated with tumor growth, were found in large tumors. They closely resembled gliosarcomas in human.
