Abstract: Nuclear DNA contents were analyzed from surgical sections of non- small cell lung cancer in 219 patients by flow cytometry. The DNA ploidy demonstrated aneuploidy in 178 patients and diploidy in 41. The five-year survival rate for the aneuploidy group was significantly lower than that for the diploid group, indicating that aneuploidy have predicted poor prognosis. With patients who had undergone absolute curative resection for Stage I + II cancer, the five-yrar survival rate for the aneuploid subgroup was lower than that for the diploid subgroup, and the difference was statistically significant. Testing with Cox's P. H. general linear model revealed that, among prognostic indicators for non-small cell lung cancer, the pN factor and DNA ploidy showed the greatest contribution to prognosis with the highest reliability. These findings indicate that the DNA Ploidy is an important prognostic indicator which can predict the postoperative course in patients with Stage I + II, and permits further division of Stage I + II disease into subgroups. Such recategorization of patients may provide important information for follow-up and determining therapeutic approaches.
