Title:
Other Titles: Nagasaki Kiyomizudera Temple
Issue Date: 24-Jun-2008
This is a distant view of Kiyomizu Temple, said to have been founded by the priest Keijun who came to Nagasaki with a Buddhist statue in 1623. Historical documents state that the "Kawarado" (tiled temple building) in the centre, which was modeled after Kiyomizu Temple in Kyoto with stone handrails surrounding it, was donated by Matsukura Shigemasa, lord of Shimabara Castle. The main temple building was added by Chinese resident He Gaocai in 1668. It is rather uncommon to use an arched doorway other than in the front hallway. Many people visit this temple to pray for the safe delivery of babies.
