Increas in the number of demented aged has become an object of social concern. The incidence rate of demented persons is estimated to be 3.1 to 5.8% of persons over the age of 65. There are many (several) hospitals and institutions which are trying to treat and rehabilitate these demented aged. However, the support system for the home-staying demented persons is not yet sufficient in japan. Suma public health center in Kobe has started a day care service program for the home-staying demented persons in Jan. 1986. The constituent staffs were organized by public health nurses, caseworkers, a medical doctor, an occupational therapist and volunteers. A total of 14 home-staying patients participated in this program. Finally, 8 patients and their families who consulted with us more than 7 times according to the program were used for this study. Through this study we observed that many demented aged showed a remakable emotional and social improvement and their families became more active and cooperative in the management of them than before the start of this program. The result in the present study indicates that our day care service program was a useful support system for the home-staying demented persons and their families.
