The authors surveyed and discussed the factors influencing of leavers, long-term absentees, and repeaters among physical therapy students (PTS) for 10 years since the establishment in the School of Allied Medical Sciences, Nagasaki University, compared with that of the nursing and the occupational therapy students in the same school, and that of PTS in two other schools. The percentage of leavers in the department of physical therapy was 3.9%, while the mean value for the three departments was 2.6%. Repeating was mainly attributed to poor grades and insufficient attendance; temporary absence and withdrawal from school may to the wrong career choice. Comparison with the cases of other schools was hindered by a number of factors including regional differences. We believe that the present survey is very valuable for the improvement of physical therapy education in the future.
