Four species of the Brevirostris-and Edwardsii-groups of the genus Alpheus are redescribed and illustrated from mudflats of the Sea of Ariake and adjacent waters. Three of them are new to the fauna of Japan. The paralectotype of Alpheus hoplocheles Coutière, 1897 selected from the collection made by Dr. P. F. von Siebold and Mr. H. Bürger in Japan, 1823-1834 is briefly mentioned below. In addition, a fauna list of the family Alpheidae mainly from mudflats of the present waters is provided.
