Abstract: Although the theory of chromatography has been dealt with in nurnerous articles,there is still a large gap betweell theory and practical application,probably as a result of phenomenal complexity and mathematical difficulty. In order to test an availability of the theory,the present experimental study was carried out on the linear and subsequently the non-linear chromatography. In the cases of molecular sieves-benzene or n-hexane systems,elution curves were symmetrical and retention times did not vary with the inlet concentration of the sample. These suggest that the adsorption isotherms are linear. In those linear chromatography,the reasonable value of the heat of adsorption was easily obtained from the retention time. In the case of the activated alumina-isobutylene system,on the other hand,elution curves showed behaviours as a non-linear chromatography. By appling the Haarhoff's theory to this system,the adsorption isotherm and the initial heat of adsorption were estimated. These results were experimentally verified by the usual volumetric measurement. In conclustion, we found that the Haarhoff's theory is applicable to analyzing the elution cuve of non-linear chromatography. However,the approximation that an adsorption isotherm is parabolic necessarily yields a limit in application. The relation among adsorption characteristics,experimental copditions and applicable ranges of the theory should be studied in future.
