Abstract: Nonlinear axi-symmetric vibrations of circular plates are investigated by using Karman's equations composed of terms of the stress function and the def1ection of the plate. A multiple degree of freedom approach which considers multiple modes and corresponding time functions is adopted to obtain more reliable solution than the previous solutions. The application of a Galerkin method to solve the governing nonlinear simultaneous partial differential equations yields nonlinear simultaneous ordinary differential equations, of which the solution is obtained by the harmonic balance method. The set of nonlinear algebraic equations is solved on the digital computer by the Newton-Raphson method. Numerical results are presented for simply supported or clamped plates whose edges are immovable or movable in the inplane direction and compared with the previous solution.
