Abstract: When the size of cross section of a stepped beam is large as compared with its length, it is necessary to analyze the charcteristics of the free vibration by using the differential equations of variable cross sectional Timoshenko beam including the effect of rotatory inertia and transverse-shear deformation. In this paper,we deduced the frequency and normal mode equations of variable cross sectional Timoshenko beam,and obtained natural frequencies and normal modes of arbtrary degrees. The results are compared with the natural frequencies of stepped beam which are derivied from the classical Bernoulli-Euler theory,and the effect of rotatory inertia,transverse-shear deformation and steppedly varying cross section on the natural frequencies are clarified.
