Abstract: Strain energy release rates were evaluated for a penny-shaped crack under a linearly varying stress, which vary with assumed configuration of cracks under propagation: concentric and eccentric circles and eccentric ellipse. The eccentric ellipse gives the largest strain energy release rate among them so that a penny-shaped crack would propagate preferentially to an eccentric ellipsoidal one. It was shown that, for three dimensional cracks, one should make a distinction between the crack extension criteria based on strain energy relcase rates and stress intensity factors. They lead different criteria contrasting to two dimensional crack cases. The strain energy release rate criterion is more reasonable according to Griffith-Irwin's energy balance consideration.
