Abstract: The arrival-position displacement derived from the eikonal equation is found to be valid under the conditions z/l<kl, kl≫1, and δ2(z/l)3≪1, where δ, l respectively denote the strength and the order of the effective size of inhomogeneities, k is the wave number in free space, and z the propagation length. This result is obtained by the application of wave theory in random media and by the presentation of a new approximation in geometrical optics. The approximation provides not only the geometric-optical clarification of the mechanism of spot dancing but also the basis of an extension of geometrical theory.
