Abstract: In this study, an optimum design of I-section composite girders is carried out considering meterial cost and total shop fabrication cost. The design variables cover almost all of the dimensions of ac ross section as well as the grade of material. In steel-concrete composite girders, many limits of stress are considered besides stresses due to dead load, live load and impact load. Even if the configuration of structures becomes more complicated and the number of elements becomes more, it is confirmed that it is possible to carry out the optimum design of the composite girders with the suboptimization which is developed at the present study and, that this method will be of practical use. Concerning the examples taken for this optimum design of a composite girder, span lengths of 20m to 40m have been dealt because these ranges are the most frequently used due to their cost-feasibility.
