Abstract: Photofunctional azobenzenes connected through two polyoxyethylene chains with terminal quinolyl groups were synthesized. These photoresponsive podands (1 and 2) showed high ion-affinity with heavy metal ions such as Cu2+, Hg2+, Pb2+, etc. and moderate affinity with alkali metal ions. 2 having two trioxyethylene chains showed the higher extractabilities (Ex %) than 1 having two dioxyethylene chains. Photo-induced trans-to-cis isomerization and thermal cis-to-trans isomerization occurred reversibly. Significant photo-improvement in Ex% was observed for extraction of Ni2+ and Pb2+ with 1 but not for extraction with 2.
