Abstract: The greater parts of curved ship-hull and vessel in chemical plant are consisted of thin shells reinforced with stiffeners. In the case that stiffeners are fitted to reduce the corresponding stresses on shell plate, thc optimum stiffness of stiffener exists according to given curvature and aspect ratio of shell plate. In this paper, shell structure is analyzed by the finite strip method and the optimization technique SMUT with the procedure of constrained condition by using penalty function is executed in order to determine the most suitable stiffener against given shell plate. The relations between optimum stiffness of stiffener and curvature or aspect ratio of shell plate are clarified.
