抄録: Variations in the contents of gaseous elements, such as oxygen, nitrogen and hydrogen, in the coexisting solid and liquid during solidification of cast irons were evaluated using their equilibrium partition coefficients between austenite and liquid iron and between eutectic liquid and its solid. The pressure of CO gas formed by the reaction [C]+[O]→CO(g) was far beyond the atmospheric pressure which is considered to be a indicator that the CO gas bubbles are possibly formed in cast iron melts. It was, therefore, indicated that the formation of CO gas bubbles hardly happens in the solidification of cast irons having carbon contents higher than 2.5%C. As for nitrogen, when nitrogen in a cast iron melt is in equilibrium with air, a higher possibility for the formation of nitrogen gas bubbles arises as the carbon content in the cast iron is reduced and the silicon content in it is increased. Similar results to the case of nitrogen were obtained for hydrogen gas bubble formation.
