Abstract: There is a singularity at the tip of crack, the edge of notch, etc. In this case, it is need to use a special finite element to obtain stress distribution at exactly by the finite element technique. Many authors have discussed the applicability of stress intensity factors for plane cracks. Tong has adopted the hybrid-element concept and the complex variable technique for constructing a special super-element to be joining with conventional finite element for the analysis of elastic stress intensity factors for plane cracks. The super-element stiffness matrix has been developed for the crack-tip region based on the hybrid model, which is assuming the stress and displacement by use of analytical values near the crack-tip. In this analysis, some complex polynomials are employed as the interpolating function of super-element formulation, so that the convergence of the super-element stiffness matrix cannot be obtained accurately. Therefore the eigen-values or the norm of the stiffness matrix are used for decision of the convergence, and some results of the stress intensity factors for central crack in the rectangular plates are shown in this paper.
