Abstract: Switzerland is a small country whose population is only about 7 million. But it is known as one of the richest countries of the world. Its per capita GDP is always ranked at global top level. The important key to understand the reason of its richness lies on the openness of the economy. This paper focused on the foreign direct investment, which is one of the main indicators showing the openness of the economy. Switzerland is one of the most important countries of origin for direct investment. It is also one of the most attractive destinations for direct investment. The purpose of this paper is to survey the trend of Swiss outward and inward direct investment and to analyze the factors behind it.
