Abstract: This paper investigates the properties of interdependence of wages and employment among labor unions in the adjustment process and the effects of macroeconomic policies on wages and employment in equilibrium. Interdependence among labor unions arises from im- perfect competition in the goods market. Although previous studies on interdependence among labor unions have assumed workers of dif-ferent unions to be gross substitutes or gross complements, we assume instead that goods of different firms are gross substitutes or gross com-plements. This assumption makes it possible to examine and compare the properties of interdependence and the effects of macroeconomic policies both in the monopoly union model and the efficient bargain model. In the monopoly union model if the goods of different firms are gross substitutes, wages of different unions are positively interdepen-dent. However in the efficient bargain model, if the goods of different firms are gross complements, employment levels of different unions are positively interdependent. As far as the effects of macroeconomic policies on wages and employment are concerned, a reduction of the lump-sum tax rather than an increase of government spending is more likely to expand the economy.
