Abstract: The dietary effect of Tetraselmis tetrathele (Prasinophyciae) on the population growth of the rotifer Brachionus plicatilis was investigated with the method of individual culture, in comparison with Chlorella sp. In individual culture, the rotifers were cultured separately in test tubes and observed daily to obtain the survival rate and fecundity while the test food suspension was renewed daily. From daily counts, intrinsic rate of population increase (r) and net reproduction rate (Ro) were calculated as the indices of dietary effect of the suspension. In the first experiment, the indices of dietary effect of the suspensions of Tetraselmis tetrathele or Chlorella sp, at various densities were obtained with the rotifer groups which were pre-cultured with the respective kinds of phytoplankton. In the second experiment, the indices for both kinds of phytoplankton were obtained with the first-laid eggs of an actively growing group of the rotifer, in order to compare strictly the dietary effect of Tetraselmis tetrathele to that of Chlorella sp. The results show that the indices for Tetraselmis tetrathele were higher than or almost as high as those for Chlorella sp. We consider that the former is a better food than or at least as good a food as the latter for the population growth of the rotifer.
