Abstract: Tigriopus japonicus feeding on dried Chlorella powder (Chlorella Industry Co. Ltd.) produced compact faecal pellets of relatively uniform shape. The faecal pellet production was strongly affected by water temperature and increased with raising temperature between 5 and 30℃. Concentrated sea water, and to a lesser extent diluted sea water, decreased the faecal pellet production. Exposure to sodium laurylbenzenesulfonate, cadmium, and copper for 7 days even at concentrations of 0.008ppm, 0.029ppm, and 0.007ppm (one thousandth of 48-h LC50) respectively, decreased the faecal pellet production. These results suggest that the faecal pellet production is one of the better indicators of physiological activity of the individual and may be useful for marine pollution bioassey.
