Abstract: The organic compounds ranging from polysaccharides to simple organic acids, such as starch, alginate, acetate and succinate, added into sea water were decomposed rapidly by consuming the dissolved oxygen in the presence of ammonium sulfate. In the unpolluted inshore sea water, the decomposition of these compounds was relatively slow. These compounds, except a few compounds, were decomposed in about the same degree as the amino acids by the addtion of ammonium salt.
