抄録: Undaria peterseniana, a species of Laminariales, grows in some limited districts in Japan, where it is used as food. The author made experimental observation on this species, concerning the liberation and attaching of zoospores, the development of gametophytes, and the germination and development of sporophytes. On the other hand, the sporophytes germinated in the laboratory were cultured in the sea, and their growth was investigated. The results are summarized as follows: 1) The shedding season of zoospores was from the middle of May to the middle of June, and the sea water temperature in this season was 18~23.5℃. 2) The number of zoospores liberated from 1g. of half-dried sorus thallus was 1~20×106. and when the thalli were put into sea water, most of zoospores were released within 10-20 minutes. 3) In the range of 15~30℃, the attaching number of zoospores was larger in lower temperature, and the attaching number was smaller in diluted sea water under 1.020 in specific gravity. 4) The shapes of zoospores and ganaetophytes of U. peterseniana were almost similar to those of U. pinnatifida as shown in Figs. 6 and 7. 5) The development of gametophytes, germination and development of sporo-phytes were satisfactory at 17.5-20℃ in water temperature, at over 1.020 in sea water specific gravity, and at 2000-4000 lux in light intensity. 6) The germination of sporophytes was generally observed under 23 or 24℃. But when the culture water was left unchanged or poor in nutrient, the gametophytes did not become mature and failed to produce sporophytes. 7) The frond length of U. peterseniana which was cultured in the sea became twice as large as that of U. pinnatifida. But with its slender frond shape, the former was smaller than the latter in the rate of the frond weight to the frond length. 8) The culture grounds suitable for U. pinnatifida also gave a good crop of U. pete-rseniana.
