Abstract: In regard to Nemalionopsis tortuosa YONEDA et YAGI, one of the natural monuments in Japan, the authors observed its reproduction and development throughout the year, and tried to explain its life-history. The materials were collected from the river Sizu and the stream of Hanabusa-mura, Kumamoto Prefecture and the river Tanai, Nagasaki Prefecture, where the authors recognized as the new locality of this alga respectively. Adult thalli of this alga are found all the year round but most aboundantly be seen from winter to spring. Monosporangium is formed on the terminal cell of an assimilating branch throughout the year, and liberation of monospore is plentifully observed from December to August, especially from March to May. After the liberation, the rounded monospore, about 11 in diameter, begins to germinate with a germ-tube and grows into a prostrate "protonem a" stage of which cells are often bended and densely crowded, and many prostrate sporelings seem to be pseudo discs. Erect filaments arise from the prostrate and become mucilaginous bushes after successive branching. The sporeling is measured 0.2-0.3mm. in lenght but can not be recognized as the chantransia stage which is usually seen in fresh water species in Nemalionales. Erect fillaments fork repeatedly to form crotical-layer outwards. Inner basal filaments of which cells being longer and having few chromatophore, grow to medullary-layer by production of rhizoidal cells. Sexual spores have not been found in either juvenile or mature plants. This fact seems to suggest that this alga reproduces asexually by means of monospores. / 1.オキチモズクは秋から初夏にかけて繁茂するが,水温の低い産地(16℃前後)では夏期でも成体が見られる. 2.單胞子嚢は周年觀察されるが,特に3~6月に多く見られる.單胞子の放出の盛期は3~5月と推定される. 3.放出後丸まつた單胞子は徑11μ位で,直ちに發芽管を出し糸状の匍匐体となる.この時期に糸状部は屈曲する爲,各部が密接して僞盤状をなすものが多い. 4.匍匐体より直立同化糸が形成され,この同化糸は分枝を繰返し互に錯綜して,粘質をおびた同化糸叢となる.これは同目の淡水産藻類に見られるChantransia stageとは見倣されない. 5.頂部の同化糸は聯基的伸長をなし外部に皮層を,内部に髓を作つて生長する.この際形される假根様細胞は二次的に同化糸となるものや附着器官となるものがある. 6.有性生殖は觀察されず,生活皮は單胞子に依つて無性生殖を繰返しているものと考える.
