Abstract: Both periclase and spinel solid solutions with cation vacancies at high temperatures through the ionic substitution expressed as, 3Mg++…2R+++ (R : Al, Cr and Fe) . When the solid solutions are annealed at the temperatures lower than those for their synthesis, both periclase and spinel solid solutions separate into two phases according to the following reactions, respectively; Mg (mR) O→Mg (nR) O+MgO・R2O3(m》n) MgO・mR2O3→MgO・nR2O3+R2O3(m》n) The phase separation, which is called exsolution, causes the coherent precipitation of MgO・R2O3 and R2O3 mainly to the grain boundries of periclase and spinel, respectively ; the coherent precipitation partly fills up pores of periclase and spinel, respectively; the coherent precipitation partly fills up pores among the grains. The decrease in R2O3 content due to the exsolution expanded the lattices of both periclase and spinel solid solutions.
