抄録: In the course of lesson in the technical education at junior high schools, there is no designation on what type of plane is to be used. Consequently, the Japanese plane is used in all schools. That plane is a tool made for professional in this field and without any development is is used as a teaching material in the classrooms. Therefore, there has been a lesson to develop the inadequate parts. Some research of a new type of plane has been done for some time, but ther is still room for more development before it can be used in class and complete solution has no been found yet. It is considered that the foreign hand plane with a cutter cap is easy when adjusting a knife because of its complete structure and also exchanging of pqrts is easily available. The orthogonal planing tests of wood against the grain with a foreign hand plane, were performed. Air-dried wooden boards of hinoki (Chamaecyparis obtusa) and white seraya (Parashorea malaanonan) were planed, and the roughness of surface planed and the deformation of the chip were observed and estimated. Characteristics of planing with a foreign hand plane are discussed, comparing planing with a Japanese hane plane.
