Abstract: There are two possible structures for CX2(X=O,S,Se,Te), a linear (D∞h) structure or a bent (C2v) one. For a C2v, the three bands, vsX-C-X, vasX-C-X and δX-C-X should appear in both Raman and infrared. For a D∞h, however, the vsX- C-X should appear in only Raman and the vasX-C-X and δX-C-X, in only infrared, that is, a principle of mutual exclusion of Raman and infrared should hold. The present author observes the evidences of D∞h for CX2 in the obtained Raman and infrared spectra.
