Abstract: Inversion of air temperature in Nagasaki City has been studied from the viewpoint of its decaying process in the morning. Temperature measurements were made by the use of the gongdra of Nagasaki Ropeway and meteorological balloons with a thermocouple or a thermistor. Main results obtained in this investigation are in the following. (1) Temperature inversions developed in fair and calm nights begin to decay from the bottom at about 8 o′clock because of heating from the ground due to insolation. (2) The inversion layer ordinarily becomes in the state of isothermal at 9 o′clock. In the case of strong inversion, however, it still remains in the medium layer (150-200cm) at that time.(3) The lower atmosphere from the ground to 300m almost changes in unstable or neutral state until 10 o′clock excepting somewhat stable condition in the medium layer.(4) The medium layer becomes neutral after 10o′clock in the case of the strongest in versions.
