Abstract: A molecule, n-butane should be expected to have a C2v symmetry for a rigid structure, even when it has the highest symmetry. However the obtained vibrational spectra seem to be explained on the basis of a non-rigid D3d symmetry for n-butane. In addition, the non-rigid structure for n-butane is strongly supported by the proton NMR spectrum. A molecule, iso-butane seems to have a non-rigid C3v structure on the basis of the NMR spectrum as well as the vibrational spectrum.
