Abstract: There are three possible configurations for propionitrile as follows; Cs, C2 and C1. However the obtained Raman and infrared spectrum of propionitrile can not be explained according to any selection rules of Cs, C2, and C1. It has been reported by the present authors that a non-rigid structure for ethyl halides (CH3-CH2-X), in which CH2 group rotates freely with respect to the three hydrogen atoms of CH3 group, is more reasonable. The obtained Raman and infrared spectrum of propionitrile can be explained on the basis of the C3v selection rules for the above mentioned non-rigid molecule. In addition to this, the vibrational spectrum of propionitrile resembles very closely that of acetonitrile (CH3-C≡N) whose symmetry is C3V. This supports strongly that the non-rigid structure of propionitrile (CH3-CH2-C≡N) is C3v.
