Abstract: In order to investigation the influence of air on the catalytic activity of pyrolyzed silver carbonate-celite, the dehydrogenation of benzyl alcohol was studied with the catalyst adding air and without air at 210-360℃. The general aspects may be summarized as follows: (1) The yield of benzaldehyde is larger in the presence of air than in the absence of air, at lower temperature (210-260℃). (2) In the presence of air, the yield of benzaldehyde decreases according as reaction temperature rises. (3) In the presence of air, benzene appears, but in the absence、 of air, toluene does. (4) In the presence of air, benzaldehyde converts to benzene and phenol, but in the absence of air, such a conversion is not recognizable.
