Abstract: Oxidation of choline was investigated. The oxidation procedure was the usual treatment of a dimethylsulfoxide solution of choline with silver carbonatecelite in air atomosphere under shading or non-shading. As the reaction proceeded, silver carbonate-celite became black. From the reaction product, betaine was isolated in fair yield. Formation of betaine was more promoted under non-shading than under shading in the above process of oxidation. Accordingly, silver carbonate-celite for choline seemed to act not only as oxidizing agent, but also as similar agent to photochemical sensitizer in this case.
