Abstract: The English that is written on signs, posters, t-shirts, etc. often has spelling and grammar mistakes, or at least is awkward in style. It is sometimes entertaining for native English speakers, but the effect on Japanese students is unclear. Do they notice it? Try to understand it? Notice errors? Students were asked these questions. They also were asked to give examples of English they did notice. The results and implications for teaching are discussed.
