Abstract: This study examined individual differences in the effects of interpersonal stress coping on mental health among adolescents. Participants were 409 undergraduate students(136 males and 273 females) with a mean age of 20.2 years. They answered the Interpersonal Stress Coping Scale (consisting of constructive coping, distancing scoping, and reassessing coping), measures of mental health (depression and loneliness), and an individual difference measure of independent and interdependent view of self. Constructive coping was significantly and positively related to depression only among people with low levels of independent view of self and with high levels of interdependent view of self. Results also indicated that reassessing coping was significantly and negatively correlated with depression only among people with low levels of independent view of self and with high levels of interdependent view of self.
