In terms of the early career, this paper aims to clarify how significant language skills and study abroad experience are for domestic companies engaged in overseas business operations to screen and select job applicants who study in the school of humanities. Semistructured interviews were conducted for 30 Japanese companies engaged in overseas business operations. The results show that only one of the companies sets criteria for language proficiency in the employment examination; the other 29 companies estimate that the possession of the high level of language proficiency is somewhat preferred rather than required and that language skills, which they think are posteriori in nature, can be fostered in training after job entry. For this reason, most of the companies put more focus on human qualities in recruitment activities, requiring as desirable skills and qualifications willingness to take on new challenges, problem consciousness and a sense of purpose, toughness and acting power.
