Abstract: To establish an animal model of the vertical infection with the rubella virus, experimental infection of mice, a strain ICR, has been studied. On 3 or 7 days after mating, pregnant mice were inoculated with the Baylor R-1 strain of rubella virus by the intramuscular or intranasal route. The neutralizing antibodies were detected in all mothers and suckling mice and the virus isolation was performed from placenta and spleen of two pregnant mice. Abnormalities and absorptions of fetuses in the uterus of infected mother mice and high mortality of newborns within two weeks after birth were observed. After two weeks from birth, the postnatal growth and sequential death were obsevred between surviving newborns from rubella infected mothers and those from non-infected mothers. No different results were found in this experiment. The pregnant mice, however, has been shown to be a highly susceptible host for studing experimental rubella infection, and it should be of considerable value in studies of the transplacental transmission.
