Abstract: A total of 52 chickens were used to determine the effects of various sex hormones of the lipid metabolism and ultrastructure of the liver. Estrogen compounds induced marked hyperlipidemia and fatty metamorphosis in the liver in both male and female chickens. An increase in endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus and lipid droplets in the hepatic cells indicated stimulation of lipid synthesis by estrogen compounds. In addition, several cases of lymphoma were observed in the liver as a result of various estrogenic treatments. Subcutaneous injections of progesterone induced fatty livers, but no significant changes occurred in the serum lipid levels of roosters. However, a marked drop in serum triglyceride levels occurred in laying-hens suggesting progesterone counteracts estrogenic compounds. No significant changes were observed in the serum lipid levels and ultrastructure of livers taken from testosterone-treated chickens.
