Abstract: Recently, due to the rapid economic growth after 1960's, the mass production and the high consumption rate, large amounts of wastes has remarkably increased. Now, since the reclamation areas cannot accommodate those high amounts of wastes about 75% of urban wastes are being incinerated. However, the result of this incineration process cannot be considered as the ultimate solution since it releases more poisonous dioxins to the atmosphere. In this research the types and sources of wastes were examined in both Nagasaki City and Nagasaki University. It was found out that the rate of the waste increase in Nagasaki City is less than the rate of increase in the whole country. Finally, the authors think that an effective treatment and improvement of the wastes by classification and separation is urgent.
