Abstract: The main objective of this study is to measure the fractal dimensions and the characteristics of both the world large rivers and some Japanese ones by using satellite imageries and satellite remote sensing numeral data, respectively. The following results were obtained : (1) The fractal dimensions of world large rivers characterize the outline of rivers which have the values of 1.00 to 1.20,(2) The use of satellite remote sensing data makes the fractal evaluation of rivers very easy, and (3) It is very useful to measure the fractal dimensions of rivers by combining both the satellite imagery and the remote sensing numeral data. Finally, the authors concluded that the decision of transverse and longitudinal fractal dimensions of rivers as well as plane one is of importance in the judgment of rivers improvement works.
