Abstract: In open and dynamic environments, where an access pattern to shared resources cannot be predicted statically, or is even changed dynamically, a distributed shared memory system must be adaptive to minimize communication overhead over network. The system must adjust parameters or even switch protocols according to situations which is monitored dynamically. This paper presents a dynamic adaptation scheme for distributed resource sharing. The system watches the transition of the access pattern (read/write ratio), and accordingly determines the number and allocation of copies (replicas) of the data dynamically and automatically. This paper also presents the system implementation using the meta-level computation framework, so that application programs are never aware of being monitored nor controlled by the system.
