抄録: In order to obtain a basic information about the correlation between failure mode and the depth of a single rectangular opening in discontinuous rock masses, an experimental and analytical studies were carried out. As of the analytical study, Distinct Element Method (DEM) for discontinuous rock masses is used, and as of the experimental study, base friction model tests for the similar rock masses were adopted. From the comparison between the observed and the analytical results of the rock masses deformation and collapse behavior, it has been clarified that DEM can be useful for stability prediction of a shallow single rectangular cavity in discontinuous rock mass.
