Abstract: We conducted tests to investigate the yielding phenomena of beam specimens under 4-point bending load. We used the carbon steel (JIS S25C steel plate). Strain gages were attached to a specimen and strains were measured during bending load. From strains measured, the relationship between bending strains and bending moments is shown, and one between the size of plastic zone and bending moments is also shown. Bending strains increase slowly after yield as moment increases, but increases rapidly when the size of total plastic zone becomes about a half of a specimen height. The strain distribution dose not become the inverse symmetrical distribution such as described in the text book and disturbances of strain distributions are observed near the top and bottom of specimen height. Bending strains within the same bending moment part of specimen have large scatter.
