Abstract: There are some coastal plants species which are distributed from Hokkaido through Honshu to northern Kyushu. The distribution and ecology of six species which show this distribution pattern were studied in western Kyushu. The six species are Messerschmidia sibirica (Linn.) Linn., Scutellaria strigillosa Hems., Plantago camtschatica Cham., Juncus gracillimus (Buchen.)V. Krecz. et Gontsch., Elymus dahuricus Turcz. and Elymus mollis Trin. The southern limits of the these species' distiributions are roughly subjected to the temperature. The southern limit lines of E. molis, E. dahuricus and P. camtschatica correspond with the isothermal line of the annual mean of 16℃ and 130°of the warm index, and those of S. strigillosa and J. gracillimus correspond with 16.5℃ and 140°. The soil moisture may have also an important bearing on the southern limit of their distributions.
