Abstract: In the wood cutting process with a tool equipped with a chip breaker, it is important to obtain the optimum conditions of sharpness angle of the chip breaker (β') and distance between tool edge and chip breaker edge (l_c) and to investigate the changes of cutting forces acting on a tool face and on a chip breaker face with β', l_c and grain angle (φ_1)(Fig.1). In order to obtain quantitative information on them, the basic orthogonal cutting tests were performed using the conventional tool and the same composite tool as used in the previous reports. The results obtained are as follows : (1) Although the cutting force acting on the chip breaker face changes with β' and l_c, it does so remarkably under the combination of larger angle of β' and smaller value of l_c. As compared with this, the cutting force acting on the tool face slightly varies with β' and l_c (Figs.2∿5). (2) The variation of the total cutting force acting on the tool equipped with a chip breaker with φ_1 decreases not only with increase in β' but also with decrease in l_c (Fig.6).
