Abstract: In the wood cutting process with a tool equipped with a chip breaker, it is important to investigate the changes of cutting force components acting on a cutting tool (T_2) and on a chip breaker (T_1) with distance between tool edge and chip breaker edge (l_c), grain angle (φ_1) and specific gravity of workpiece (γ_u) and to make clear the optimum condition of l_c. In order to obtain quantitative information on them, the basic orthogonal cutting tests were performed using the same composite tool as used in the previous reports^<1)&acd;4)> (Fig. 1 and Tables 1 and 2). The results obtained are as follows : (1) The cutting force components acting on T_2,T_1 and on both T_2 and T_1 increase proportionally with increase in r_u (Fig.2). And they can be expressed by Eqs. (3)&acd;(7). In Eqs. (3)&acd;(7), F_H and F_V, horizontal and vertical components of cutting force, respectively; F and N, frictional and normal forces, respectively; and α, constant. The cutting force components acting on T_2,T_1,and both T_2 and T_1 are denoted by subscripts in the bracket, i. e., K, B, and B・K, respectively. (2) Although the coefficients in Eqs. (4), (5) and (7) change remarkably with l_c, those in Eqs. (3) and (6) do slightly with l_c (Fig. 3). (3) Although the coefficients in Eqs. (4) change with φ_1 under the combination of depth of cut (t) of 0.2mm and l_c=0.40mm, they do little with φ_1 under the combination of t=0.3mm and l_c=0.40mm (Fig.4).
