Abstract: In the present paper, the stress distribution on the interface between the tool and the chip in the veneer cutting with the sharp bar were made clear, using the composite tool which was divided into two parts. The results obtained are summarized as follows : (1) The normal stress (σ) and the frictional stress (τ) over a rake face under the sharp bar compression can be expressed by Eq.(2), as a function of the distance (l) on the rake face from the tool edge. These stresses are larger in the veneer cutting with the sharp bar than without a pressure bar, referring to the results of the distributions in the previous report. (2) The ratio of the cutting force on the rake face near the tool edge to the total cutting force on the rake face is larger in the veneer cutting with the sharp bar than without a pressure bar (Table 4).
