Abstract: This report clarifies the effects of the tool inclination-angle (I) and the grain orientation of the workpiece upon the components and two kinds of the resultant of the cutting force and the frictional coefficient in the oblique cutting of wood perpendicular to the grain. Air-dried specimens of sugi (Cryptomeria japonica) and shirakashi (Quercus myrsinaefolia) were used in this study. Specimens were cut by feeding a tool which was set on the same experimental apparatus equipped with a three-dimensional elastic-ring dynamometer as used in a previous reports. The lateral (F_x), main (F_Y), and thrust (F_Z) components of the cutting force acting on the tool were measured. In addition, the conditions of the cutting surfaces of the workpiece were observed and estimated. Using the measured components, the resultants (R and R_C) and the frictional coefficient (μ) on the tool rake - face were calculated. Then, the effects of the cutting conditions (I) , the depth of cut (t_n) and the workpiece conditions (wood species and grain orientation) upon them, and the relationship of μ to the conditions of the cutting surfaces of the workpiece are discussed.
